Challenge to Tennessee abortion waiting period moves forward
The Tennessean

A stalled legal challenge to Tennessee's 48-hour abortion waiting period is moving forward two years after a group of clinics first filed suit. The federal court case began in 2015 shortly after Gov. Bill Haslam signed into law a measure requiring women seeking abortions to first get in-person counseling from a doctor then wait at least 48 hours before returning for the procedure. The case also challenged state rules requiring doctors performing abortions to have admitting privileges at local hospitals and for abortion clinics to be certified as outpatient surgery centers. But within months, the litigation was put on hold while the U.S. Supreme Court considered a challenge to a Texas law on admitting privileges and surgery center requirements. The Supreme Court struck down the Texas law as unconstitutional in 2016.
