Chile's Congress Approves Abortion in Limited Cases

The legislation, approved late Wednesday night, will go into effect if Chileâs Constitutional Tribunal gives it the green light in coming days.The vote followed a contentious, yearslong debate in one of the few countries where abortion remains illegal in all cases. Abortion was allowed in Chile under some circumstances from 1931 until 1989, when the military junta abolished it.âToday, women reclaimed a basic right that we never should have lost: being able to choose when weâre living through painful moments,â Ms. Bachelet wrote on Twitter.Conservative factions in Chileâs Congress fought abortion legalization bills vigorously over the years, even as a growing number of Chileans came to see abortion as a fundamental right.
