Guest Essay: George Will oversimplifies abortion issue

Guest Essay: George Will oversimplifies abortion issue
Rochester Democrat and Chronicle

For a renowned intellectual, George Willâs recent column on abortion is intellectually dishonest to a shocking degree, and does a great disservice by masking a complex issue with false simplicity.First, the Supreme Courtâs opinion in Roe v. Wade was deeply thoughtful and honest, stating that âWe forthwith acknowledge our awareness of the sensitive and emotional nature of the abortion controversy, of the vigorous opposing views, even among physicians, and of the deep and seemingly absolute convictions that the subject inspires.âSecond, though conservatives have repeated the lie so much they may even believe it, Roe v. Wade does not even remotely endorse abortion at will throughout pregnancy. During the first trimester âthe abortion decision and its effectuation must be left to the medical judgment of the pregnant womanâs attending physicianâ; during the second, the State âmay, if it chooses, regulate the abortion procedure in ways that are reasonably related to maternal healthâ; and during the third, the State âmay, if it chooses, regulate, and even proscribe, abortion except where it is necessary, in appropriate medical judgment, for the preservation of the life or health of the mother.
