Legislature's latest bills take up hot button issues: abortion, family leave and pot

LANSING, MICH. - The hot-button issues of marijuana, abortion and parental leave time all were included in bills introduced in the Legislature last week. Democrats introduced the abortion and reproductive health bills in the hopes of rolling back legislation passed by Republican majorities in recent years. The bills would repeal laws that require a 24-hour waiting period between the time of asking for and getting an abortion, and an additional rider to insurance coverage if a woman wants an abortion covered by health insurance.They also want to prohibit any future laws that would interfere with the doctor/patient relationship or impede access to an abortion.“In recent years, we’ve seen legislation passed under the guise of ‘protecting women’s health’ that makes it nearly impossible for women to access abortion,” said Sen.
